Dr. Saveera Parkash, a Hindu woman from Pakistan’s Buner district, has filed her nomination papers to run in the upcoming general elections in 2024. She has filed nomination papers for the assemblies PK-25 constituency of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly as well as the reserved seats in the national and provincial assembly.
According to details shared by election commission of Pakistan a total of 115 women have filed nominations for the 115 general seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly, and around 459 people have filed nominations for the 60 reserved seats for women in the National Assembly, including 97 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Dr. Saveera Parkash’s nomination for the Pakistan general elections in 2024 is important because she is the country’s first woman from a minority community to file nomination papers for a general seat. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) recently amended the law to require a 5% representation of women candidates in general elections. Her nomination represents a huge step forward in a country battling with religion and gender inclusiveness in politics.
